Kay Waterbound, Part 1

CONDITION

This early 1960s Kay banjo had been played very little and stored where it got wet many times. The pale yellow paint had mostly flaked off. The resonator had almost completely delaminated and was too far gone to save. I salvaged the decorative pattern on the back but will not be using it on this project. The steel hardware was very rusty. The peghead had gotten so wet that the side extensions had fallen off. The rim has some delamination, mostly of the veneer.

On the good side, the instrument is remarkably complete, missing only the head. The neck is straight. The rim is round. All the wood is quite sound. The frets are very lightly worn and the rosewood fingerboard is in good shape, although it is partly pulled off of the neck. This will be a relatively easy rehab job.
